Funding Received for Assessment and Conceptual Design of Pond Street Stream Crossing Replacement

The Town of Braintree was recently awarded $43,200 through the state Department of Ecological Restoration’s Culvert Replacement Municipal Assistance Grant program, part of the Environment & Climate One Stop state funding opportunity. This award funds the Pond Street Stream Crossing Replacement - Assessment and Conceptual Design Project. 

The Pond Street Stream Crossing Replacement Project will assess and design the replacement of an undersized, deteriorating twin-pipe culvert with a structure meeting Massachusetts Stream Crossing Standards. The project will complete field investigations, hydraulic modeling, alternatives analysis, and a conceptual design to restore natural stream function, improve flood conveyance, and reduce roadway vulnerability. This crossing is the final barrier preventing Alewife and Blueback Herring from reaching Sunset Lake, a 57-acre historic spawning habitat. Downstream dam removals have already restored passage to the Monatiquot River, and replacing this culvert will complete that restoration. Pond Street is a heavily used arterial supporting emergency response, school transportation, municipal operations, and access to commercial and industrial areas. The project will enhance ecological connectivity and climate resilience.
